Why are the PSOP usage plots different from the P3e plots?

P3e calculates overload for an entire time period when drawing its plots; this can result in incorrect over-allocation information. For example, consider the following schedule for the lawn project introduced in the overview:

The Cut Lawn and Edge Path activities are both scheduled to be working between 8:00 am and 10:00 am. Since both activities use the same resource (the father) and since there is only one of this resource available, the resource is over-allocated during this two hour period. However, if you view the resource usage plot in P3e you see the following:

which indicates no overload! In fact, it looks like there is plenty of resource availability. The image above shows the usage plot with a date interval of day/shift. P3e adds up the total resource availability and total resource use for the whole day. If the total use exceeds the total availability, over-allocation (in red) is shown. In this example, although over-allocation exists, it is not shown because the total availability for the day exceeds the total use for the day. This same issue exists with any date interval selected for the plot. Indeed, larger intervals like month, quarter, or year only make the problem worse.

The PSOP usage plots correctly show all over-allocation. As a result PSOP may show over-allocation when Primavera shows none.

P3e ignores roles when leveling and when calculating and displaying over-allocation. If you level using roles (more information...) PSOP will display usage for the roles instead of the resource. This may result in plots that are different in PSOP and P3e.
