Project Schedule Optimization Package
The Project Schedule Optimization Package (PSOP) is a software add-on for the Primavera scheduling application.
PSOP works seamlessly in the background of Primavera to provide
unprecedented schedule optimizations, minimizing the total project
duration while maintaining all the constraints and dependencies defined
by the scheduler. The advanced algorithms used in the optimization process can only be found in PSOP.
Features
- Results: PSOP quickly produces schedules with shorter duration and less overload than can be acheived by other means.
- Seamless integration: PSOP installs itself as a drop-down option in the Tools menu.
- Reporting:
Results screen compares original and existing schedules, both
graphically and quantitatively so you can quickly see how PSOP has
improved your existing schedule.
- Access to state of the art technology: The technology that underlies PSOP is protected by OTS and is unavailable elsewhere.
- Works with Primavera Enterprise 4.1 & 5.0.

Advantages over the built-in Primavera levelling technology
- Results:
Primavera builds a single schedule and that is what you get. PSOP
considers many possible schedules and often therefore finds schedules
that are better than those produced by Primavera. Example and details.
- Leveling by role: While P3e
allows you to assign resources or roles to activities, it will only
consider resources when leveling. PSOP allows you to level using
resources, roles, or a combination of both. PSOP can even substitute
primary roles for resources that have already been assigned. Example and details
- Overload reduction:
If there is a task that must involve some overload, the Primavera
leveler will schedule it as early as possible, even if there is another
start time that has significantly less overload. PSOP will select
the start time with the least possible overtime. Example and details.
- Constraints obeyed:
Primavera ignores some constraints when leveling. For example, it
might schedule a task after its 'Must end on or before' date. PSOP
allows you to obey these constraints if you like. Example and details.
- Handling in-progress tasks:If
a task is partially complete, the P3e leveler might separate the
remaining work from the completed work. In many cases, this does not
makes sense - once a task has started, you do not want it interrupted.
The is no way to prevent P3e from doing this, short of adding
constraints or mandatory dates to the in-progress activities. PSOP
allows you to not split in-progress tasks. Example and details.
- Correct handling of resource calendars:
The Primavera leveler does not always correctly handle resource
calendars and may schedule activities to work when the resources needed
are not available. PSOP handles resource calendars correctly. Example and details.
Example Results
This
screenshot compares PSOP and Primavera (with default options) leveled
schedules. On this project (construction of an airplane wing),
PSOP produces a schedule that is 27% shorter and has no overload (it
removes all the overload in the Primavera schedule):
